UAK (Young Professional Women in Iceland) was founded in May 2014 by Lilja Gylfadóttir. The organization was officially launched in September later that year when almost 200 young women attended its inaugural meeting, which underlined the interest and necessity for such an organization. Since then, participation has increased further and the organization keeps growing each year.
Young Professional Women in Iceland (UAK) is an organization that encourages equality, paradigm shift and advancement in society. UAK is an organization for women that want to succeed in various fileds of the economy and do everything in their power to eliminate difficulties that young professional women face every day.
UAK’s members have a diverse background; some are already working, others seeking higher education. There is no criteria or age limit to join the organization. As long as women find themselves within the organization, they are welcome. UAK is open to new registrations throughout the year and all women who are interested are encouraged to register.
The organization seeks to create a forum for women to learn and to promote each other. The network between women who pursue the same goals is invaluable. Each event’s purpose is to increase UAK’s members’ strength and fill them with enthusiasm, regardless of whether the meetings are at an interesting company or an educational meeting.
Young Professional Women in Iceland want to promote a society where women and men are equal and offered the same opportunities. The goal is to strengthen the position and future of young women as managers and members of the economy. Until men and women are equal in Icelandic society, UAK will continue to work and promote equality through education, discussion and encouragement.
